DNS help at RIPE

DNS stands for Domain Name Servers, RIPE stands for Registrar of the IP address space in Europe (title is in French, thus abbreviation does not fit the name). Whenever you ask your computer to present you with webpage, once you enter the address (www.example.com) your computer contacts DNS server delegated to it, and sends it a DNS query (asking literally – what IP is behind the www.example.com). What Is a BotNet and How Does It Happen

BotNet, that I wrote about in pre-previous article, is a term that many of my friends are not familiar with. What would be a BotNet and what dangers does it impose on you, end user; where does it originate and how does it propagate?

Lets start from the beginning. BotNets are networks consisting of bot-computers, robotized machines that can be given any set of instructions or code to evaluate and execute. Such robot-computers are actually end-user computers, just like yours, that have been compromised and contaminated with mutant virus. Viruses, unlike a decade ago, do not have firm boundaries and classifications; rather, viruses of today and tomorrow are mutants that combine and incorporate many malicious behaviours.

Iserdo of Mariposa BotNet gone down!

It seems taht intl police task-forces managed to arrest the head of the largest botnet ever, Mariposa botnet. It has been said that this botnet has connected anything between 8 and 12 billion zombie-computers; extracted complete information usable for identity theft – information on about 800.000 individuals, including social security numbers, dates of birth, and other information used by imposters to create fake identities, credit cards, etc. It seems that this botnet united admins from more than 190 countries and infected high-profile computers, such as those in big ass firms – it is also believed that this botnet has had some control over desktops in more than 40 fortune100 companies.
